Health in Nigeria

The Nigeria health sector is currently struggling out of the doldrums that it has found itself. The problems facing the health sector are multifaceted and has arisen due to poor economical policies as well as political and social factors during the course of the country's history. Lack of commitment on the part of the government has worsened the fragile sector, especially under the Military rule.

The current government has on many occasions noted their commitment to this sector. This rhetoric is not met with actions particularly in the area of finance. According to the UNDP report (2004), both the Public and Private expenditure as a percentage of the GDP is 0.8 and 2.6 respectively.

There are is a shortage of health workers in Nigeria, many who have emigrated for economic and social reasons. It has been estimated that there are only 27 Physicians available per 100,000 people in Nigeria. Nigeria life expectancy at birth stands at 45 years.
